About San Andrés Island
San Andrés Island was discovered in 1629 by the English and Jamaican woodcutters. Over the next 200 years, the island was fought over by the Dutch, French, British and Spanish, during which time the pirate Henry Morgan acted as a Welsh marine governor. Morgan chose San Andrés as his hideaway in which to store his treasure. In 1786, England acknowledged Spain as the sovereign of the island and in 1821 the Republic of Colombia formally acquired the islands.
